The ABCs Of Baby Sleep Safety: A Guide For Parents

This article includes an offer from our friends at Newton Baby.

Here at Newton Baby, we’re passionate about sleep safety. We’ve worked with countless parents who lose sleep over their babies’ nap time and nighttime safety. If you tend to fret while your baby sleeps, you’re not alone!

The good news is that maintaining peace of mind while your infant sleeps is possible. One of the best defenses is learning and practicing the ABCs of baby\We’ve broken it down into three easy-to-remember tips.

The ABCs Of Baby Sleep Safety

A: Alone

A is for “Alone.”

This means your baby should be alone in their own bed while he or she sleeps. The only thing in your baby’s crib should be a fitted crib sheet — preferably, Breathable, Organic Cotton Sheets.

But they can have a sweet stuffed animal in bed with them, right? Nope. Alone means alone. Unless your pediatrician gives you the thumbs up, no pillows, blankets, or stuffed animals until your baby is over the age of one.

B: Back

B is for “Back.”

Always place your baby on their back to sleep, even if your little one prefers his or her side or tummy. This goes for both naps and nighttime. It’s the safest position for your little one!

Tummy time is important for proper development, but it should not happen when your baby is  falling asleep. Always have tummy time when your little one is wide awake and ready to play.

C: Crib

C is for “Crib.”

Your baby should sleep in his or her own crib. While room-sharing — putting your baby’s crib or bassinet in your room — is recommended for at least the first six months, sharing your bed is never recommended!

Instead, set up a designated safe sleep space just for your baby. It's important that they always sleep in their own crib or bassinet.

Sleep Well, Little One!

These are the basics — the ABCs, as we like to call them — of baby sleep safety! Sticking to these three tips can help save your baby's life and prevent suffocation.

However, as a parent, you know that some things aren't in your control, like when your baby rolls onto their tummy in the middle of the night. What should you do in that case?

There’s no need to go into your little one’s nursery to put them on their back again. If they can roll onto their tummy, they can roll back over.

That said, even once your little one gets the hang of rolling over, you should still put them to sleep on their back. Just know that they will probably move around during the night.

Thanks to our 100% breathable crib mattress, the Newton Baby Crib Mattress, the entire family can sleep easier! Even if your little one does end up with their face in the mattress, they'll still be able to breathe easily. That’s what we call peace of mind.

With a Newton Baby Crib Mattress and the sleep safety ABCs, you and your little one are on the way to peace of mind and a good, safe night of sleep! Rest well, one and all.
